he Enlightenment in the 18th century addressed religious issues and social issues because it allowed people to think whatever way they wanted, such as, Atheism, Rococo Art, and Laissez-Faire
Religious beliefs -
Deism: The world was like a machine
Immanuel Kant: Defined the Enlightenment as man leaving his self conscious
John Locke: Everybody born with a blank mind
John Wesley: "gift of God's grace" assured him of salvation
Poland: newly found religious tolerance
Pietism: desire for a deeper personal devotion to God
D'holbach: Strict Atheism, and materialism, God not necessary, humans were machines
Skepticism: having doubts or questioning attitudes, especially about religion
Social Issues -
Voltaire: Criticized many of Frances policies like religious toleration and royal absolutism and admired English government, he lived in France
